Kino Forum, ul. Legionowa 5, tickets: 25 zł (presale), 35 zł (on the day of the event)                                                     7.12.2016, 20:30

One of ŻUBROFFKA’s traditions is the opening ceremony during which the world stars live score for silent films. So far, Forum cinema has hosted, among others, DJ Qbert, MUM or Blockhead. This year, we have the honour to present a dubstep legend and Hyperdub label founder, KODE9. He is going to play live soundtrack to Blackmail, the film directed by the master of suspense, Alfred Hitchcock!

Blackmail (UK, 1929, 85’)

After an argument with her boyfriend, Alice visits an artist she had met earlier. When she agrees to sit for him, he gives her a dancer’s outfit. When Alice is getting changed, the man attempts to rape her. She grabs a knife and kills him. Soon after, Alice is blackmailed by a dark witness… Thera are two versions of the film: silent and sound. The latter one was the first British talkie. In Bialystok we are going to see the silent version.

Alfred Hitchcock (1899-1980) – an English film director, screenwriter and producer, master of suspense, inventor of thriller genre. The cinema genius who developed his own inimitable style (specific black humour), making massively popular films of high artistic quality. Hitchcock always appears in his films for a few seconds somewhere in the background – anyone who knows his films, is familiar with this characteristic silhouette of a stout elderly gentleman in a black suit. His most outstanding films include Strangers on a Train (1951), Rear Window (1955), Vertigo (1958), North by Northwest (1959), Psycho (1960), and The Birds (1963).

Kode9 – an English artist and visionary, a leading figure of the world dubstep scene, the owner of the influential label Hyperdub (Burial, The Bug, Zombie, CoolyG, Ikonika). He owes his mature view on music to philosophy at the University of Warwick (PhD title), where he also took part in classes on afrofuturism, postmodernism, cybernetics and rave culture. It all helped him to become a specialist in sound and its role in man’s life, allowing for a series of experiments that have shaped his position on the music market (the author of the book Sonic Warfare: Sound, Affect and The Ecology of Fear). In 2000, he moved to London where he began his career as a DJ and started work for a popular Rinse.fm. Setting up Hyperdub (2004) was a turning point in his activity and led to popularizing dubstep. Kode9 can also boast about the releases for Aphex Twin and remixes of Lee Scratch Perry, Battles and Junior Boyz.
