A Woman. Stories from Central and Eastern Europe

What does a woman’s life look like in a world narrated by men? Female filmmakers from Eastern Europe share their own perspective on the multitude of dimensions of the female experience, which often turns out to be brutally universal. For centuries, it has been men who have spoken most boldly about ‘women’s issues’, taking their idea of the experience of femininity as a simple truth that needs no verification.

The time has come, however, to give the floor to those to whom it belongs in the first place. The films presented in the set are dominated by statements confronting the audience with the painful aspects of womanhood (from relational difficulties through single parenthood to the experience of violence and rape). At the same time, the female protagonists of each of the titles exude strength and determination in their pursuit of independence in areas where the right to it seems self-evident (choice of partners, space to pursue one’s own needs, consent in sex, the possibility of ending a violent relationship, the process of recovering from trauma).

When women’s stories start to bite their own tail, it is time for herstories and a change of perspective to be able to verify the imagined stories through the eyes of their protagonists!
