It has been about 20 years since the collapse of the Soviet Union. 20 years can be enough to create and shape a generation with new views and different perspectives. However, the period is short for countries like Azerbaijan, where the Soviet rule of governance is still dominant. Because the effect of this type of control manifests itself in all areas, cinematography is no exception. The Azerbaijani cinema is still unable to escape the chains of old Soviet traditions because it depends on the government in 90% and only fulfills its orders. Yet the new generation, despite all the difficulties, is trying to create their own cinema language, bringing contemporary secular issues to our national cinema. They are already participating in a number of prestigious festivals, e.g. Venice, Cannes, Berlinale, Karlovy Vary, Marseille, Idfa, Hotdocs, among others, trying to capture the trends of the world’s cinema. The short films presented at these festivals are examples of the independent cinema that began to emerge – and continues with confidence – in Azerbaijan.
