Competition (18+)

NOTHER, feat. MOON LEAP: US
director: Marco Santi
director of photography: Stefano Usberghi
Italy, 2022, 5’11’’

A chef teaches his young colleague how to dance to prepare him for a very special date.

DISTURBED: BAD MAN
director: Tristan Holmes
director of photography: Na
USA, 2023, 3’30’’

Inspired by the plight of the Ukrainian people it is a poignant and powerful comment on the world today and the rise of autocracy not only in Eastern Europe but in other parts of the world.

K+M+B: ++
director: Bingi Bongi
director of photography: Mārcis Ābele
Latvia, 2022, 4’25’’

The idea for the video was inspired by the visual images used by the collective previously, performing their performance “Magic of Good Words”. The band has used capirotes and other similar masks that are still used in various religious and occult rituals and ceremonies, as well as in pop culture performances. Director has created a narrative which emphasises initiation as ritual (and vice versa). Bingi bongi is using his signature elements of suspense, absurdity and black humour, and by creating the video of “++”, he launches video series of +K+M+B, creating an imagery of priests and maids.

LOA FRIDA: LOA
director: Melinda Kádár
director of photography: Melinda Kádár
France, Poland, 2022, 3’54’’

Somewhere in a secret fold of the world, a girl-plant inhabited by joyful thoughts draws from the dark cave of her heart whimsical little pink horses animated by a childlike and pure joy. When her flying eyes meet an erupting volcano, their tears adorn her body with the joy of the moment.

TOURIST: YOUR LOVE
director: Duncan Loudon
director of photography: Krzysztof Trojnar
United Kingdom, 2022, 5’4’’

Duncan Loudon imagines the life of a stuntman in his remarkable video for DJ/producer Tourist.
Loudon takes us on to a film set, and into the world of stuntman-supreme Andy Bennett, as he goes about his daily business – and at the same time, also childminds his young daughter. And it all leads up to one of the most terrifyingly impressive of all movie stunts, when Bennett is doused in petrol and set alight, and then becomes a walking man on fire.
Loudon establishes a mesmeric tone with a combination of documentary and impressionistic teasing beyond the frame of reality. Bennett also plays the part of the leading actor that he is doing stunts for. The division between the two is not easily distinguishable.
But then there is of course the setpiece stunt. It is unmistakeably authentic, and Loudon takes us right into this feat of technique and sheer courage – and makes it poetic. Brilliantly achieved.

LA JUNGLE: DU SANG DU SINGE
director: Alex Orma
director of photography: Sander Vandenbroucke
Belgium, 2022, 4’55’’

The „dancing plague” is taking hold of the residents of Brussels. It all starts with a bad cough and turns into uncontrollable, zombie-like spasms. Alex’ reference is the Black Death, a mysterious event in the 16th century. A virus causing people to dance non-stop until they eventually died from a stroke or exhaustion. Much like La Jungle’s track, the rhythm settles very quickly in the brain of the listener and brings them into this frantic state.

SON LUX: UNDERTOW
director: Alex Cook
director of photography: Drew Bienemann
USA, 2022, 7’4’’

A child encounters a strange presence during the death of his father. Now, as an adult, he is haunted by this presence in the form of his doppelgänger.

HAK BAKER: DOOLALLY
director: Hugh Mulhern
director of photography: Eoin McLoughlin
United Kingdom, 2023, 4’16’’

„Doolally” is a party anthem, but within the context of Hak’s album and its wider themes, I think it’s also about escaping, disassociating and connection through disconnection. The film mixes 3D animation, AI generative animation, props, and puppets at an active warehouse party. Hugh wanted to make something that felt like you were falling through different layers of reality swept up in the momentum of a night out that lasts 36 hours.

THOM DRAFT: TENSE
director: Albert Albert
director of photography/zdjęcia: Carlos Ritter
France/Francja, 2023, 4’14’’

The music video was shot entirely on smartphones, and offers a cautionary tale about living life through a phone lens.

DJ PIPER: RIP TXL
director: Raman Djafari
director of photography: Raman Djafari
Germany, 2022, 3’30’’

Five friends, growing up in Berlin Spandau, experience the surreality of adolesence, with all its magic, emotion and adventure.

ARSSALENDO: QUATTRO PARETI
director: Giada Bossi
director of photography: Francesca Pavoni
Italy, 2022, 6’35’’

When the family of a kid hides from him his dog’s death, the older brother takes the kid on a brutal journey towards the grieving process.

SQUID: SWING (IN A DREAM)
director: Yoonha Park
director of photography: Alex Gallitano
USA, United Kingdom, 2022, 5’

A few dozen characters, representing different occupants of the space at different times, interact with one another, observed in an unbroken take by a roving camera.

PHARRELL WILLIAMS: CASH IN CASH OUT
director: François Rousselet
France, 2022, 3’38’’

„Cash In Cash Out” came about at the start of the pandemic in 2020 when all live action production came to a halt. In order to make something spectacular, François Rousselet came up with an approach that only used CG. While the content was to be generated entirely in CG, François wanted the audience to question if it had actually been made and shot for real. 3D characters based on Pharrell Williams, Tyler, the Creator, and 21 Savage perform Cash In Cash Out on a CG-animated zoetrope that spins endlessly. The characters saunter on the spot in a world filled with money and fast cars.

GENER8ION, 070 Shake: NEO SURF
director: Romain Gavras
director of photography: Nicolas Loir
France, 2021, 4’329’’

GENER8ION is a multidisciplinary collaborative project led by producer and composer Surkin and director Romain Gavras. It takes place in the near future (2034), in a disillusioned and damaged world, with puzzling poetry embodied by idle youth and underlying violence.

THE HIVES: BOGUS OPERANDI
director: Aube Perrie
director of photography: Joel Hördegård
Sweden, 2023, 3’49’’

The Hives is an awesome nightmare. A frenetic, cabin in the woods experience with bloodshed equal to Raimi’s mighty “Evil Dead”.

BABASONICOS: BYE BYE
director: David Maruchniak
director of photography: N/A
Argentina, 2022, 4’40’’

A shady man surrounded by dark pleasures thinks he can get away with anything, until he watches his whole world collapse.

Afterparty: ZUCHY

Zuchy – a producer-dj collective formed on the initiative of Zambon, founder and owner of The Very Polish Cut-Outs label and the Transatlantyk Records. The second element is DYYU∩E, a Wrocław-based producer and DJ who, in addition to his solo activities, used to co-create Hush Hush Pony and Astro Buhloone.
Zuchy boldly lists the likes of Andrew Weatherall, Optimo and Dirty Soundsystem among their inspirations, and their DJ sets are a total eclectic freestyle through the nooks and crannies of dance electronica.
Zuchy earned their first badge of skills by remixing the track ‘Za mało czasu’ from the repertoire of the duo Fisz Emade Tworzywo, the vinyl version of which sold out in one day.
