ZUBROFFKA special: SCOTTISH FOCUS

Scotland is a nation on the periphery, and finds cultural expression in the playfulness that comes from political impotence. Scottish film is characterised by gritty subject matter, dark humour and occasional flashes of magical realism, finding beauty in the banal. Opening with a slice of social realism that veers into unexpected territory, this showcase of recent Scottish filmmaking subverts genres and confounds expectations. A hapless monkey dreams of space travel, a young filmmaker hands over control of his production to his reluctant grandfather and a tribe of ancient warriors face an unexpected foe. Drawing on Scotland’s rich traditions of animation and documentary, as well as recent successes on the international festival circuit, the programme has been selected for Zubroffka by Glasgow Short Film Festival, Scotland’s leading short film event.
