With more people writing about film than ever, standing out from the crowd is increasingly difficult. Critics’ workshops are designed to help participants widen their tastes, to follow their interests, to place their own viewpoint in a broader cultural landscape, to develop their writing skills and to sharpen their critical thinking. They also provide experience of attending a film festival in a professional capacity: participants will work under multiple deadlines, meet and network with fellow professionals, learn how to get their work commissioned by editors and will be encouraged to find new ways to write critically and creatively about the cinema and the world at large. Critics’ workshops don’t just foster an appreciation for films; they are also a highly reactive breeding ground for intellectual thought as a noble and social enterprise in itself.

Michael Pattison is a freelance film critic from Gateshead, UK. His writing has been published by Sight & Sound, The Guardian, MUBI, Fandor, Film Comment, Little White Lies and many others, and he has also reviewed films for BBC Radio. Michael is also a programming consultant for a number of international film festivals. A graduate of the critics’ workshops at Locarno and Rotterdam film festivals, he organised and led the inaugural five-day young critics’ workshop at Dokufest 2014 in Prizren, Kosovo.
