What does an average Pole know about Armenia and Armenians? Not much. We may know they are one of the nine minorities in Poland. We may also know the country is far away but not so much as it used to be a Soviet republic. Many of us have no idea if it is a Christian or Muslim country or what language they speak. Someone may have heard about the Armenian Genocide but wouldn’t know who carried it out. Someone else may have heard about the war in Nagorno-Karabakh but does not know the details. I have recently read a FB comment: Slaughter is in their tradition. It is really surprising that living so close, we know so little about each other.
I hope this selection of Armenian short films will bridge this gap. Their authors are people who were born in the USSR but they went to school already in an independent country. Affected by the war, they sat in cold classrooms and did their homework by candlelight. When young Armenians decided to make films, they had to fend for themselves and help each other. This is not optimistic cinema, it lacks bright colours. The films are based on authentic experiences, sometimes autobiographical. This is Armenian cinema today, but tomorrow will certainly be better.
