All the colours of autumn years

Once again, in collaboration with the University of the Third Age, we invite you to a special edition of the Senior Film Discussion Club during ŻUBROFFKA! We will present three award-winning short stories about human needs, worries, and dreams. Each film showcases different shades of human life, especially in its later stages.

“Bitter” by Marcin Kluczykowski is a poignant story about an elderly couple, Karol and Henryk, whose relationship remains a secret from those around them. Their routine and peaceful everyday life is disrupted by an unexpected wedding invitation, forcing them to confront their fears and societal expectations. The film touches on themes of ageing, love, and acceptance, showing that it’s never too late for courage.

“They came” by Bartosz Brzeziński takes place in Podlasie just before Christmas. In the home of Bogusia, a widow of the local organist, inexplicable events begin to occur. Muddy footprints in the yard, mysterious shadows, and strange sounds make Bogusia believe that they are signs from her tragically deceased husband. However, the explanation turns out to be different… The film addresses the topic of unresolved grief and loneliness, which can influence how reality is perceived, teaching us to face our fears, not just those related to the supernatural.

“The Power of Resistance” by Elżbieta Benkowska is set during the times of the Polish People’s Republic and tells the story of a young actress involved in the Solidarity movement, waiting for an operation that could save her father’s life. On the brink of a promising theatrical career, Olga shows determination and courage in her fight against the authorities, who try to coerce her into cooperation through blackmail. This story, a dialogue with the cinema of moral anxiety and the myth of the romantic hero, presents a woman caught in the spiral of systemic violence, revealing a universal tale of power’s pathologies and personal choices beneath the historical film costume.

After the screening, we will discuss the different shades of our lives over traditional coffee and tea.
