Belarus out of…

Although there are no world famous film studios or great producers in Belarus, feature films are still made. But they’re made outside the system. Most young filmmakers operate outside the national education system and without support from the government so they are automatically excluded from the official filming environment and underestimated by the officially recognized artists’ associations.
Interestingly, outside the borders of Belarus they find support and understanding for their projects as well as recognition for their talent. So they look for opportunities to develop and funds for their films abroad while making those movies at home, often using subject matter connected to their place of birth.
The oft repeated cliché: “Belarusian cinema doesn’t exist” seems, therefore, to be obsolete. The films presented here are proof that contemporary Belarusian cinema does indeed exist. It is, of course, young but it is maturing along with its creators.
