Faces of Islam

Short films section – contemporary stories from the world of Islam (from Morocco, Tunisia and Somalia) has been prepared by the organizers of Afrykamera Festival. The programme includes films from 2012, which received a mention at festivals in Fespaco, Dubai or Hamptons. “Salaam” is a story of a Somalian who tries to bring his family to Sweden. What is he ready to sacrifice in order to do it? Nader, the hero of  “Shoes for Eid”, cannot stop running. In a shop he sees a pair of shoes which his parents cannot afford. “Left Hand of God” touches an interesting problem – devout, uneducated Muslims associate the use of left hand with the worship of the devil. Father of a young lefty Abdelali is merciless towards his son, who by doing ordinary, everyday activities, “betrays” their  religion. Another film “When they slept” tells a story of a widow, Amina, who lives with her children and an aging father, creating a modest living but happy family. A deeply binding relationship connects eight-year-old Sarah and her caring grandfather. The protagonist of “The Curse” is a young woman who wants to experience carefree happiness. A moment of joy, however, entails cruel consequences.

The guest of the show: Przemyslaw Stępień, artistic director of Afrykamera Festival
