ŻUFROFFKA is a cinematic celebration. We want to enjoy and experience it with you all – both the creators and the viewers. We can’t, however, walk idly by violence, pervasive hate speech, lack of tolerance or racism. The events which took place in Białystok in July of this year touched us deeply. For that reason we have prepared a special program dealing with various types of violence and hate. But if we’re going to talk about all that we want to do it with film.
The program varies in regard to subject matter and style. It includes movies about school bullying, a street lynching, neighborhood violence and a documentary recording of a demonstration which is a portrait of the conflict between two powers currently opposing each other in our nation. It also contains an Oscar-winning film about racism and Romain Garvas’ music video of the song M.I.A which deals with the consequences of that phenomenon and with the fact that each one of us can become a victim too, regardless of where we come from or the color of our skin.
The movies describe varying types of violence and hate, at times completely dissimilar. Although their sources are the same, all the movies show certain mechanisms impacting verbal or physical violence. Ultimately, we all know that violence begets violence but we reject any form of hate, intolerance, racism or xenophobia!
