ŻUBROFFKA will begin celebrating its 18th birthday and entry into adulthood with an exciting, surreal journey led by the most famous Alice in history—a girl who can pass through the looking glass! Accompanying the first feature-length film adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s novel, “Alice in Wonderland”, made in 1915, will be a live performance by Dorian Concept—an Austrian synthesizer virtuoso who transcends genres, experimentally blending electronic music with jazz, ambient, and club sounds!

Alice in Wonderland
dir. W. W. Young, USA 1915, 52’

Based on motifs from the books “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” and “Through the Looking-Glass,” the film is the third cinematic adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s novel—a surreal tale of a young girl traversing a dreamscape steeped in (il)logic and absurdity. This fantastical world is extraordinary, populated by incredible characters, settings, and events.
Despite the passage of time, the film continues to captivate audiences with its imaginative execution. The surrealism inherent in the novel is amplified on screen by the costumes, featuring animals of unreal proportions, and the pantomimic movements of actors who are impeccably made-up. The characters, modelled after the original book illustrations, and the highly effective set design bring figures such as the Queen of Hearts, the White Rabbit, the Cheshire Cat, the giant Turtle, the Komodo dragon, and crabs emerging from the sea to life, enchanting viewers even today.
Though W.W. Young’s work has not survived in its entirety, the remaining fragments offer a wealth of visual delights, inviting us to step into an entirely different reality—a realm of dreams and wonder…
