451 degrees Fahrenheit is the temperature at which paper burns. We know this from Ray Bradbury’s classic novel and François Truffaut’s film about a dystopian world where the written word is banned and firemen burn books. Let’s quickly convert this temperature to the familiar 233 degrees Celsius to better realise that censorship, the restriction of freedom to write, speak and even think, is not the domain of science fiction, but a real threat here and now.

Censorship is a political issue (could 233 MPs in the Polish Sejm pass relevant laws?), but it happens on many levels simultaneously. States violently restrict access to information for their citizens, algorithms mysteriously decide on reach and push users towards fake, hateful news, and greedy corporations grasp at any method to silence local activists. No less dangerous is self-censorship, averting our eyes from present and past tragedies happening around us, keeping lips sealed, keeping skeletons in the closet.
We have prepared this set of films, showing people and societies struggling with the spectre of censorship hanging over them, in its various manifestations and shades. It is an expression of our belief that cinema should not only look at the world, but also speak out loudly on behalf of those who are unjustly tried to be silenced.
