Special programme: Bulgaria – traces of the young revolution

Throughout its history, Bulgaria has experienced the ups and downs. Before the World War II the country experienced an economic boom, but taking over power by the Communists in 1945 marked the beginning of a dark period in its history. After 1989, the Communists lost  power, however years passed before the generation that wasn’t afraid to fight for its rights emerged. Last year, the parliament passed a bill to facilitate the construction of ski tracks on Vitosha mountain near Sofia. For a few days outraged young people blocked the main intersection in the town (Eagles’ Bridge). In 2013, protests broke out again, this time against the overestimated electricity bills. The government resigned, but the owner of the most of the media in Bulgaria (unfavorable to protesters) became the chief of the National Security Office. The biggest protests erupted then and they last until today.

Bulgarian society is ready for a change, which can be seen in all areas of life, especially in the arts. In the works of young directors one can feel that mood and see the reflection of social problems. This year, the documentary “Vitosha” directed by Lyubomir Mladenov was presented at Sofia Film Fest. The film covers the events that took place on the Eagles’ Bridge. Short, powerful films were also made by Paul Wesnakov. Kristina Grozeva and Petar Valchanov in their film “Jump” make fun of the rules imposed by the authorities in touch with reality. In turn, Ned Morfov in his film “Morning” refers to the need for a dialogue between the authorities and common people, and Hristo Simeonov (“Sunshine through the Rain”) raises the problem of the Romani minority.
